Lesson 05: Objectives of fasting and its affects on practical life

i. Controlling one's sensual appetite, Nafs:

The significant thing that stops a person from the path of piety and takes him to the path of evil is his physical desire. If desires obey the directions of Allah (W.S.T), then these become the source of propagation of human's individual and collective traits otherwise these degrade a person even below than that of the status of animals.

The real objective of fasting is to make a person righteous by letting him to surrender to Allah's commandments. A person, who exercises to control his desires for a month every year to please Allah, he gets that power of controlling his desires so that he faces successfully all temptations of Satan.

ii. Fear of Allah (Taqwa):

The main objective of observing fast is to achieve Taqwa. If the fasting. is observed with fulfilling all conditions and for the sake of Allah, if a person observes fasting for full month, then fear of Allah and righteousness are engrained in his/her heart and that person becomes righteous.

iii. Spirit of Sacrifice:

The habit of being contented on less amount of food produces the traits of contentment and sacrifice in a person during the same time, Muslim Ummah engaging in an act of worship becomes the source of increase in the spirit of sacrifice. In that manner, Prophet Muhammad regarded Ramadan as the month of sympathy, and sorrow healing.

iv. Physical Advantages:

To keep stomach empty for the bigger part of day for a month is beneficial for human health. Overeating is like an invitation to stomach ailments. There is Zakah for everything and Zakah of body is fasting. The Prophet said:

Translation: You should keep fasting.so that you remain healthy...

v. Feeling of sympathy with needy people:

During Ramadan, the feeling of sympathy for poor and other weak people increases greatly. Charity and spending in path of Allah prevail everywhere. The feeling of sympathy produces better societal relations. Our Prophet would immensely increase giving charity during the month of Ramdan. The reward of charity and spending in path of Allah is immense during this month and highly greater than other months.

vi. Spiritual Strength:

Fasting stops a person from sins and urges to do good deeds. A person becomes spiritually strong due to fasting. This is that spiritual strength which brings a person closer to Allah. Morcover, this is the greatest evidence of his success as Allah said while describing the aim of fasting, "Fasting has been made mandatory for you so that you fear Allah".

vii. Acceptance of supplication:

The fasting observer has been given this reward by Allah J that his supplication is not rejected. It is saying of Prophet that Prayer of three person is not rejected, a person who fasts, his supplication at the time of Iftar, secondly supplication of a just king and third, supplication of a person who is brutalized. "Therefore, fasting is the best source for the acceptance of supplication.

viii. Intercession:

Fasting will intercede a person on the day of Judgement. Prophet said, Fasting and Quran both will intercede a person. Fasting, would say, "O Lord, I kept this person away from eating, drinking and sensual desires, accept my intercession. Therefore, fasting is a great source to obtain intercession:

ix. Giving up fasting is a great loss:

Fasting has great significance. Therefore leaving it causes huge loss. It is saying of Prophet, "If any one without any religious excuse or without any disease doesn't observe even one fasting of Ramdan, if that person fasts for whole of his life that loss can not be repaired. Therefore, fasting should be observed considering it a great blessing.

Ramadan and holy Quran:

Ramadan and Quran are integral parts of each other. The distinction of Ramadan is due to Quran. Allah says:

Translation: The month of Ramadan (is that) in which was revealed the Quran, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So who ever sights (the new moon of the month) the month, let him fast it.

x. Ramadan and Pakistan:

Although, Ramadan is the month of blessing and forgiveness for all Muslims of world but for us Pakistanis, the significance of this month and one of its blessed nights is due to this reason also that Allah granted us freedom during this blessed night. The creation of Pakistan during twenty seventh night of Ramadan was an indication towards this fact that the system of this holy book should be implemented in this God-gifted country, as this holy book was also revealed during this blessed night. Moreover, we demanded Pakistan for this objective that Islamic code of life should be implemented here. In that regard, the month of Ramadan is the time of birthday of creation of Pakistan and an opportunity to revive our promise to Almighty Allah.
